Volunteers
Volunteers, who serve as Court Diversion Board members and Restorative Panel members, are an important part of Youth Services. They are enthusiastic community members with strong communication skills and a commitment to a restorative justice philosophy. All volunteers are trained on an ongoing basis and commit to two hours of service at a pre-scheduled time. Volunteering in this way can be a fascinating way of learning about the problems facing youth today and give you a firsthand experience of Youth Services’ approach to redirecting youth.
Youth Services’ Diversion Boards are made up of a cross-section of civic-minded community members who meet once a month with youth referred to our agency by the State’s Attorney Office after involvement in delinquency or criminal activity. Together with our Teen Alcohol Safety Program, Diversion handles more than 570 new cases each year. It is a voluntary alternative to the court process and has been quite successful in reducing repeat offenses.
The Diversion Boards involve victims, offenders and community members in a constructive process that helps juvenile offenders make amends to victims and the community while taking responsibility for their unlawful actions.

I drank heavily every day before I smashed my mom’s car and was charged with providing alcohol to a minor. When I went through Court Diversion they forced me to look at what I was doing and where I was going.
During the counseling I found out that I have been depressed for a long time now. Now I’m getting help and making some changes.Derek
