Emergency Housing
Many youth and families turn to Youth Services’ emergency housing program where youth can access temporary shelter through host homes in their communities when either they or their family are going through some type of crisis. This service often provides youth with time to reflect away from the pressures of family stress and to consider what has to happen in order for them to live together successfully. While it can be intimidating for a young person to consider spending time with a stranger, the host homes are trained to create a safe environment.
Volunteer households agree to provide shelter and food and to include youth in family activities. Youth and parents agree to enter a dialogue addressing their underlying problems. Youth can stay up to 14 days with parent/guardian approval, although due to the supportive mediation services provided by Youth Services, most youth stay for 1-3 nights.
Host home applicants undergo a screening process that includes an interview, home visit and criminal background check. Youth Services provides shelter parents with training, ongoing support and a small stipend to help cover costs. Shelter parents also have access to 24-hour on-call services at Youth Services.
